Act of Oblivion

Act of Oblivion

Historical fiction | Robert Harris | Hutchinson Heinmann publishers

The reader is transported to mid-seventeenth century England following the turbulent War of the Three Kingdoms, the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, and in 1660, the restoration of the Stuart monarchy. The novel revolves around the vengeful hunt for the men involved with the 1649 execution of Charles I. Known as ‘regicides’, these individuals were systematically pursued, brought to trial and executed. The single-minded (fictional) secretary of the regicide committee of the Privy Council leads the chase to the Continent and as far as New England. This well-paced and well-written novel was only marred by an overly detailed account of the executions.
